    Abstract:

The field variables model has recently emerged as a powerful approach for simulating microstructure evolution in materials. It describes the microstructure using a set of conserved and non-conserved field variables in the form of higher order differentials. It can predict and control complex microstructure evolution with these field variables by computer simulation. This paper reviews the fundamental principle of the field variables model and recent progress in the field of materials science and engineering.
