Special Issue: Refractory Metals 2024

Message of Guest Editor-in-Chief:

Refractory metals mainly include tungsten (W), molybdenum (Mo), tantalum (Ta), niobium (Nb), rhenium (Re), zirconium (Zr), hafnium (Hf), etc., which have high melting point, high strength, high hardness, low thermal expansion coefficient, low resistivity, good thermal stability, wear resistance and strong corrosion resistance. They play an irreplaceable role in high temperature and high pressure fields, such as aviation, aerospace, nuclear energy, electronics, and metallurgy. At present, the preparation methods of refractory metals and their alloys mainly include powder metallurgy and vacuum smelting. Under the trend of high performance and diversification, new refractory metal materials, new preparation processes, and new application fields continue to emerge, such as multi-phase refractory alloys, refractory high entropy alloys, additive manufacturing technology, and low temperature controlled sintering technology. However, there are still some common problems in the development and processing of refractory metals, such as poor composition innovation ability, difficulty in powder preparation and modification, difficulty in sintering densification, difficulty in matching molten impurities with segregation, difficulty in strengthening and toughening, poor oxidation resistance, difficulty in adjusting microstructure uniformity, lack of understanding of mechanical behavior and deformation mechanism. Therefore, solving the abovementioned challenges is of great significance to exert the resource advantages in the refractory field, therefore highlighting the independent innovation, developing the "high, fine and sharp" series products, and realizing the application of high quality and high value of refractory metal materials.
