Message from Editor-in-Chief
With the vigorous development of strategic emerging industries such as deep-sea work platforms and nuclear energy in China, efficient and high-quality connection technology and equipment manufacturing for new materials and extreme service environments will play a more important role. The "14th Five-Year Plan" and the outline of the 2035 vision goals both indicate that it is necessary to focus on promoting the optimization and upgrading of the manufacturing industry, clearly put forward the in-depth implementation of intelligent manufacturing and green manufacturing projects, develop a new model of service-oriented manufacturing, and promote the high-end, intelligent and green development of the manufacturing industry. Material connection technology is the cornerstone to ensure the high-quality development of manufacturing industry. In actual production, components composed of new materials and heterogeneous materials can exert the excellent performance of various materials, and have clear application needs in the technical fields of Marine high-end equipment manufacturing, new energy industry and weapons and equipment lightweight.
However, there are still serious challenges to realize the high reliability connection of new materials and dissimilar materials. Problems such as large differences in physical properties between materials, complex interface reactions, and large residual stress of welded joints will seriously affect the quality of joints. Extreme service environments such as deep sea, irradiation, corrosion, high and low temperature also put forward more stringent performance requirements for high-quality and efficient welding manufacturing and repair technology. The above problems have seriously restricted the rapid development of related industries, and it is urgent to carry out basic theoretical and applied research on special connection of new materials and welding technology in extreme environments.

Sun Qingqing, Professor/doctoral supervisor of Harbin Institute of Technology (Weihai), Taishan Scholar of Shandong Province, leader of special environmental welding team. In recent years, he has focused on special service environment manufacturing fields such as deep-sea manned equipment, nuclear power construction and in-service restoration, and offshore oil production work platforms, and engaged in research on efficient automatic welding technology, special environment welding methods and mechanisms. He has published more than 100 high-level academic papers and authorized more than 20 national invention patents. As the person in charge, he has undertaken more than 60 projects and topics such as national 973 and 863 programs, National Key Research and development Programs, National Natural Science Foundation, key projects of Shandong Province Nature Fund, Shandong Province key research and development Program, and Shandong Province science and technology research. Led the team to break through the key technologies of low stress welding and quality control of large thick wall titanium alloy structures, and the underwater laser clean welding and repair technology in the narrow space of irradiation environment.

Liu Yibo, professor/doctoral supervisor of Harbin Institute of Technology (Weihai), senior member of Chinese Society of Mechanical Engineering, member of Youth Committee of China Welding Association. He is mainly engaged in research in the field of special environmental manufacturing, focusing on material connection methods and equipment manufacturing needs under extreme working environments such as deep sea, deep space and irradiation, and carrying out research on light-heterogeneous material connection metallurgy and strengthening and toughening mechanism, so as to improve the service reliability of large and special equipment. He has presided over more than 20 projects such as National Natural Science Foundation Youth and Surface Project, national major science and technology special project, deep-sea Space Station cultivation project, Shandong Innovation Base special project, nuclear power special project, HIT Major Innovation cultivation plan and so on. He has published more than 70 high-level academic papers and authorized 15 national invention patents.
Scope and requirements of papers
(including but not limited to) new materials, dissimilar materials connection technology and quality control mechanism, for the deep sea, irradiation, high pressure, low temperature, high temperature and other extreme service environment equipment manufacturing key technologies and basic theories.
